Welcome to the sixth edition of the Static Pamphlet

This month we present four texts which, like others in this series, explore ‘Them and Us’. These texts have been published together to present a range of explorations of the relationship between individual and social. Ricardo Basbaum explores, through image, live works and text, the pronouns, ‘You and Me’, while Catherine Jiggens reports on the difficulties of orchestrating a group, whilst also providing for the individuals within it.

Craig Buckley’s rich interview with Temporary Services explores the complexity of ownership, authorship and copyright when collaborating with a prisoner.

Salomé Voegelin explores the flux between the experience of subjectivity and objectivity in the film ‘Dark Passage’ and the effect this has on the generation of criticism. We await a review of Imogen Stidworthy’s, ‘A Whisper Heard’ and Static is also keen to receive letters about, or longer reviews of any contemporary event. If you are visiting an event then Static wants your opinions. However, Static would be particularly interested to receive texts exploring The Whitechapel’s forthcoming, ‘A Short History of Performance II’ , Engage 2003 and the ICIA’s (University of Bath) Conference, 'Pleasure and Pain'.

Look out for next month's edition where two writers and artists explore the ‘Them and Us’ relationships created in popular music, and ‘underground communities’.

*Our online status means that new texts will be added daily, so this month's Pamphlet isn't complete until 24 October. Watch this space for further reviews and letters.

Purpose of Pamphlet

There is a distinct lack of distribution channels for quick-fire response to art,  cultural events, policies and writing, and more generally a dearth of critical thinking.

The Static Pamphlet will ensure that if last night's exhibition was exceptional or if it was weak, there is a place for someone to say it publicly, today. By encouraging criticism we hope it will make it matter that work is good. This is of particular importance in places and circuits of activity where the current criticism structures seldom reach. The Static Pamphlet consists of a letters page, updated daily, longer articles and a monthly commissioned essay on the theme of 'Us and Them'. A new Pamphlet is issued monthly on the 25th, and a hard-copy distribution available on the 9th of every month. Static actively seeks and welcomes letters, articles and essay proposals.
